North County Battalion Soccer (now San Diego Surf) was founded in 2015 as part of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). Their first season began in April 2016. The club places strong emphasis not only on high caliber competitive soccer, but also on service to the San Diego community and support for San Diego’s military personnel and first responders.
To help establish their presence in the San Diego sports scene, NC Battalion reached out to Fan and Fuel in July 2015 to build their brand identity, website, and digital marketing strategy from the ground up. The project launched in October 2016.
Fan and Fuel played an integral role in NC Battalion’s initial growth in San Diego. I worked closely with the team owner and coaching staff to establish a strategic plan that would introduce both the NC Battalion brand and the team itself to San Diego’s soccer fans. Fan and Fuel created a logo, branding strategy, and website design that reflected the team’s mission and core values. I designed a wide range of collateral marketing material for the team, including their merchandise collection, customized game day flags and posters, customized tickets, and other print materials. In addition, Fan & Fuel established their SEO and mail marketing strategies to help them stay front-and-center in the San Diego soccer world.
Through both the design and the digital marketing arms of the project a strong, professional online presence was created for NC Battalion, as well as a secure ecommerce platform for the sale of club merchandise.

With the help of Fan and Fuel’s services, NC Battalion got off to a stellar start in San Diego. Compared to average attendance of a few dozen people for new NPSL teams, NC Battalion had over 1,000 people at their first game in April 2016. The success of NC Battalion’s branding and marketing outreach even led to a new investor, with Sunrise Capital partnering with the team in 2016.
In late 2016, NC Battalion partnered with San Diego Surf Soccer Club. The club has now moved to the United Soccer League’s (USL) Premier Development League (PDL), moving one step closer to Major League Soccer. We are extremely proud of the role we played in helping NC Battalion get its start in San Diego, and we look forward to watching the team continue to grow!
